Working on our 3^rd season together I can only say it gets better all the time. Kotsy and I got to know each other over the years and to be quite frank about it... I think we have one of the better all around hockey shows on the air today. Largely because Chris brings an element of knowledge and experience to the show while never budging from the core of his values… to tell it how it is! Chris makes no bones about it, almost to a fault. There is no doubt Kotsy knows the game and with his work in college hockey, TV& Radio he can land a job with the best on any platform inside the game. So to say I’m lucky to have him co-host the show with me on one of the weaker platforms available would be a gross understatement. With that said I would like to take the opportunity to thank the so many loyal fans and friends we have gotten to know throughout these last 3 seasons. Please take the time to let us know how we are doing and what more we could do to grow our listener ship. I have taken the show to a personal level and feel it is my job to feed the so many hockey fans a show that they can relate to without the BS. In the recent events plaguing the NHL with two suicides in the past few months of “Role Players” and the accidental overdose this past summer has been said all could relate back to fighting in hockey. As someone who has never played the game in any professional role I can only offer my opinion stated on facts around the great world of athletes and sport. Why would any one feel this is strictly about fighting in hockey? Throughout the world of sport there are many who fight for a living, Boxers, Martial artist, etc. and yet thousands of fights and fighters have no after effects of suicide. So again why would anyone want to relate these tragic incidents strictly to fighting in the game of Hockey? Is it about concussions? or trauma to the brain? And if so, again I point to the wide world of sports. With all the physical sports in the country and the many who suffer head injuries. Why not more accidental overdoses or suicides? These past events are tragic and by all means need serious investigation. I completely understand the urgency for resolve and the commitment to move forward as quickly as possible, in which I believe the NHL and Players association need to have every possible resource available to the players and their families. But until there is absolute evidence that fighting in hockey is the root cause of these tragic events I could only hope the NHL will not remove what is a very important role in the sport of hockey.

As summer unfolded Kotsy and I worked on some changes for the show, notably the new name. With our unique style and controversial discussions we strive to inform, and provide our listeners with the hard topics that have plagued the NHL. With Kotsy’s NHL experience and my tenaciousness to expose topics the NHL would rather sweep under the rug it only seemed suitable to rename the show The Instigators Hockey Show.

Times have changed and so must the rules!

After much debate and conversation over the hit on Marc Savard, I‘m now in favor of the “Head Shot” rule. I have heard all sides and many make great points, but after watching both this hit and the Booth hit one thing to me is for sure, the players making the hit could have EASILY made body contact, but instead Choose to make Head contact, even more so on the Cooke hit. Matt Cooke Purposely hits Savard in the head! Just 3 more inches and Cooke could have made good clean shoulder contact with probably the same result. Why then didn’t he? Because there are no repercussions, no accountability in the game of hockey anymore, what does Cooke have to fear? The game has changed much in the last 20 years not so much for the better, but it has changed, and so must the rules. Like it or not this type of hit must be removed from the game. The sport can’t support this type of action with these current rules, 20years ago this very hit wouldn’t be a discussion, why you ask? For the simple reason the players on the ice would have handled it then and there! That fans is no longer an option, so under the current NHL rules I feel this “Head Shot” rule is the right move for now.

Bring Back Old School Hockey!

I have been in and around the Sport of Hockey my whole life and 10 or more years ago Matt Cooke’s hit on Marc Savard would have been legal, But Matt Cooke would NOT have been wearing a visor and would have “PAYED DEARLY” for the hit as well, just seconds after it! With the “New” NHL the Instigator penalty and heavy fines to protect players like Cooke there is NO Accountability for his actions on the ice. Players like Matt Cooke didn’t exist in the NHL for long, before the rule changes just a few short years ago. Could you imagine if someone ran Wayne Gretzky like that? Until the NHL lets the players “police the ice” the way only they can the sport will have to adapt year after year or eliminate contact almost altogether. Matt Cooke and players like him are not held ACCOUNTABLE for their actions on the ice, and will continue to push the limits and the rules of the game. I ask you again what would have happen if that was Wayne? Marty Mcsorley would have RIPPED Matt Cooke’s eyes out of his head and shoved them down his throat and Matt Cooke and players like him would think twice before they hit a player with a legal “dirty” hit!

The two talked about the Glencross hit on Chris Drury, and ran down the issue of head hunting today in the NHL and how cheapshots should be governed by the league. Other topics included Chris Chelios and his future, the Ranger's lack of aggression, needed rule changes, and the changes in hockey from the 80s/90s to today. And near the end of the broadcast, the Mouth from Ranger Crisis drops by to give his always entertaining two cents.

Notes on the Tampa Bay Shootout

With the Tampa Bay Shootout over, I'd like to offer a few notes and impressions from the event, which took place October 23-25.

Teams from across the country came together over three days in the Tampa Bay area for some great technical, and sometimes physical, hockey. Teams traveled from all across the USA, and even from as far as Ontario, Montreal, and Nova Scotia. And even farther, the eventual winner of the open division came to us from Slovakia. It was an interesting mix of both people and playing styles.

The competition got more and more heated as the playoffs started. Several players found their way to the penalty box as the stakes kept getting higher and higher.

And that goes to show how seriously these teams took the tournament. This wasn't a collection of hobbyists or backyard players. These were cohesive teams that took the game seriously. They knew how to play, how to shoot, how to check, how to pass. It was amazing to watch just how good a lot of the guys and girls were in the rink, from setting up plays on offense to sacrificing themselves to stop a shot on defense.

The misconception of these events is the players aren't that good and can only play to a certain level. But in watching even one game you can tell that's not the case. No matter what division, whether open, rec, master's, or women's, everyone could go. Every player had skill. And some players were spectacular. I'd see a player on a breakaway sprinting down the rink, handling the puck perfectly before setting up a perfect one-timer goal to an awaiting teammate. I'd watch time-and-time again as goalies made four or five saves in a row, going head-over-heels to block the shot, glove the rebound, and force a face-off.

It was a great three-day weekend, and my hat is off to the hardworking men and women who gave their all during the event.

There's a lot going on at the program. Almost too much, in fact. Forget the fact that the Rangers are starting to really get rolling... Forget that opening week of the NHL is just around the corner...

Yes the man of the hour, the ten-year NHL vet, returned once again to The Pauly D Radio Program for a packed show. Topics included, but were not limited to, the ongoing NHL preseason (with an emphasis on the Rangers), the etiquette of fighting, opinions on current players, and the future outlook of the sport. In other news, we got in contact with a great organization up in Barrie, Ontario who are offering an exceptional service. It starts September 30th. I'll add their write up below.

A new league offered at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club

We here at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club are very excited to announce that we have added a new league at our facility. P.U.C. is a league for people with both physical and developmental disabilities. Each participant will receive a jersey with their team colour, and a participation award at the end of the season.

The season will consist of 12 games over a 12 week period. Playoffs will be held on the last night of the schedule. Each team will have 2 coaches who are able to help out on the rink if your player needs help. Parents or respite workers are also more then welcome to come on the rink and help their player get the most out of the game.

The cost of the league will be $90.00 dollars and it will take place on Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 6:30. The first game will be a meet and greet with your team and coach, with a little practice ending in a game.

We look forward to experiencing hockey with you and your player.
